There were many strange, but cool events and trends this past year.

There have been many different trends that have captivated the country, and for some trends, the world. But, what are the top ten trends and videos of 2016?

10 – Running Man Challenge

Made famous by basketball players Jaylen Brantley and Jared Nickens, the running man challenge was huge during the early months of the year. It consisted of simple dancing to “My Boo,” a ‘90s hit song from the band Ghost Town DJs.

9 – Olympics

The 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil was huge. Almost everyone tuned in just to watch some of the world’s best athletes. Most people watched when they were bored, eating dinner, doing homework, etc. Everyone loved to watch the Olympics.

8 – The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead was without a doubt the most talked-about show of the year. It included one of the most dramatic season premieres ever. Everyone knew what happened, whether they watched the show or not. Everyone was intrigued to watch what happened every Sunday evening.

7 – Pokémon Go

Pokémon is big for some people, but weird for others. But this app grabbed the attention of over 100 million people. 100 million people! Most of us went outside to try and level up or attempt to catch some Pokémon. Most people gave this app a chance, even those people that called Pokémon stupid before.

6 – Pen Pineapple Apple Pen

By far the weirdest and far-fetched trend this year, Pen Pineapple Apple Pen was a viral video that everyone watched over and over. The video shows nothing but Japanese comedian Daimaou Kosaka combining pens, pineapples, and apples to create random objects such as a pineapplepen or applepen.

5 – Clash Royale

Supercell made a name for themselves again once they made this game. With only half of Pokémon Go’s downloads, Clash Royale was the top grossing game in the U.S. It included multiple characters seen from Supercell’s earlier game, Clash of Clans, and new characters that most people put into their decks to fight their way to victory in the arena.

4 – Mannequin Challenge

Coming in late this past year didn’t stop the Mannequin Challenge from hitting it big. Standing still while someone held a camera and zooms around you and the other people in your group while the song “Black Beatles” plays, this challenge is truly an original trend.

3 – The Dab

Dabbing, dabbing, dabbing, that is what everyone does on a daily basis. Most people dab at least once or twice a day. However normal it is now, if you did this one year ago, you would be the laughing stock of school. The dab is truly a phenomenon that looks weird but is very normal.

2 – Harambe

Roses are red, violets are blue, there’s one less gorilla at Cincinnati Zoo. Late May, Harambe was shot because a young child fell into his cage. Since this, the media has exploded with the controversy of whether he should have been shot or not.  And now, everyone knows about this poor gorilla.

1 – Water Bottle Flipping

Thump! Thump! Thump! That is what you hear when someone has a water bottle handy. Everyone without a doubt has tried to land a water bottle flip and even cap it. And people who have been followers of this trend know the satisfying feeling of landing a trickshot and beating a personal record. It’s so easy too. Just grab a water bottle and let the flipping begin.

Ahhh, 2016. The year with everything: challenges, tv shows, games, and so much more. Just because we have to leave 2016 behind and start 2017 doesn’t mean we can’t have these great trends in the new year.
