Social Media – Good Or Bad?

Many people have different opinions of social media apps like Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. A survey conducted at Day Creek showed what students think about social media and whether or not they post comments on the internet.

Students who don’t participate in social media had much to say.

“{Social media} It’s a waste of time, distracting, and inappropriate. There is a lot of bad pictures, videos, and words that rot the mind,” stated Ryan M.

“It is a fun way to interact with friends on the internet, but people can get too attached and stare into their phones all day,” stated Allie S.

“Social media is okay as long as you know how to use it, but there are crazy people out there who do crazy things,” stated Alison B.

Some kids who do have social media responded surprisingly similarly to students who do not have social media.

“It’s pointless, but very addicting,” stated Caden B.

“I personally don’t think kids should have social media because we need to focus on school. Most of the time I get distracted and don’t focus as much,” stated Carly W.

“I don’t use it a lot because it is not my priority. People get caught up in how many followers they have,” stated Izzy M.

The average user logs onto social media 1.72 hours per day, which can cause significant problems.  According to DoSomething.org, 90% of teens have been cyberbullied and have done nothing about it. In addition, social media usually has a negative impact on people and bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide.

If all these dreadful things can happen to kids on social media, then why are the sites so popular on the internet?
