Alysa Liu, a U.S. figure skater, won gold at the Winter Olympics at age 20 after returning to competition following her retirement at age 16. She secured the victory with an error-free program, defeating Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto and Ami Nakai.
After her win, Liu said, “I don’t need this [medal], but what I needed was the stage. And I got that. So I was good no matter what happened. If I fell on every jump, I would still be wearing this dress, so it’s all good.”
Liu previously stepped away from the sport because figure skating felt more like a job than a passion. Upon returning, she set clear boundaries for herself, choosing to compete on her own terms, without strict diets or overworking. When asked how she felt on the ice, Liu said the emotions she experienced were “calm, happy, and confident.”
Her positive energy radiated throughout the arena, inspiring fans and fellow athletes alike.
