On January 3, Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured by U.S. special forces in a surprise military raid. The couple was flown into New York, where they faced multiple charges related to alleged narco-terrorism and drug trafficking. District attorneys say they helped protect these illegal shipments.
In federal court, Maduro and Flores pleaded “not guilty.” Maduro called himself a “prisoner of war” and argued that he was kidnapped. As the trial case moves towards March 17, the defendants remain in denial of their charges in a high-security jail while waiting for their trial.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez is now acting leader of the country. She is working to keep things calm while negotiating about oil trade in an effort to improve the relationship between our two countries.
