PepsiCo, the company that makes many popular snacks and drinks in America, is changing its classic chips to make them healthier. The new chips will have the same crunch, tang and taste, but without artificial flavors or synthetic dyes.
This update comes after pressure from Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. He has pushed companies to remove synthetic dyes from food. His big goal is to get these dyes out of the nation’s food supply completely.
The new chips use natural flavors like spices and cheeses instead of artificial ones. The healthier version, called “NKD” chips, is starting to appear on store shelves. For now, customers can still buy the original chips too. This lets people try the new options while keeping the classic versions available.
“I think that marketing will go up because there are a lot of people, especially in these times, who are concerned about the red dyes,” said Dominic D.
Many people see this change as a good thing. Teens especially like the idea of a tasty snack without artificial ingredients.
“I think when they remove the food dye it’s healthier for people,…but I personally think it’s more healthy than other [chips,] and so the company cares about [people’s] health,” said Cici W., a student on campus.
Nutritionists say that cutting back on artificial additives, even in small amounts, can help people who snack often.
But the changes might cause some problems. PepsiCo chips are famous for their bright colors, which make the bags stand out in stores. Without artificial dyes, the chips may look less exciting. For example, Cheetos are known for leaving orange dust, called “cheetle,” on your fingers.
“I think the color of the chips could affect the marketing because the chips are known for leaving your fingers messy. If the packaging is different, they won’t stand out in stores because colors grasp people in,” said Lylah G.
In the end, PepsiCo is trying to keep great flavor while making their chips healthier. Though there might be some marketing challenges, the new chips give people healthier choices. This could set a new standard for snacks across the board. Whether the new chips become popular or not, PepsiCo is definitely listening to its customer’s concerns in offering healthier options.
