On May 11th, 2018, Amazon will raise the price for its Prime service from 99 dollars to 119 dollars annually. Jeff Bezos announced that Amazon prime has more than 100 million members worldwide. The price change is due to the drastic increase of items that are eligible for two day shipping. In 2014, there were 20 million items that were eligible for two day shipping. In 2018, that amount rose to 100 million.

As said on Recode, “Amazon is increasing the price of its Prime membership in the U.S. for the first time in four years…Amazon also has spent billions to acquire and create a large library of movies and TV shows that Prime members stream for no extra cost. Amazon executives say that the entertainment offering helps court new Prime members and gives current Prime members another reason to stay with the program.”
