When the Los Osos High School band came to Day Creek Intermediate School, they blew the audience away!  On September 4, 2015, Los Osos entertained Day Creek students with a musical show on the outside multi-purpose room stage. This is a once-a-year event that students at DCIS seem to greatly enjoy.

The Los Osos band were proud to be on campus to show what they could do for middle schoolers.

“[The best part of band] is spending time with the people. It’s a big group and you get to know everybody there.  You get to bond with them. Being in band helps develop your leadership skills and how you work well with a team.  [If you walk in the room] you see kids yelling, screaming, running around, having a good time,” said Gina W., a tall flags band member.

There are also a lot of exciting activities they do together as a team.

“A lot of times we go to tournaments. Everyone is there to see [us play], and the applause is really loud,” Gina said.  “Things are not always fun and games in band however, “[The environment] can be harsh at times. As far as discipline, you have to really know [what you’re doing]. But it’s fun when it’s supposed to be.”

Aside from entertaining Day Creek’s students, the band also uses the event to recruit its next generation of musicians.

“We do a band camp each year, the first week, the week before school starts. Our traditions, are we play at all the football games, we do the Founder’s Day Parade every year, and we do other show tournaments. We always do the parade in Disneyland. Field show tournaments and competitions on Saturdays. It’s hard to pick a favorite, they are all so different. I like the variety of practicing for the parade vs. practicing for the field show. We come here [to Day Creek] to play for the Day Creek students to see who we are, what we do, and we also use it as a practice place. [I was inspired by band because] I had a teacher in junior high, and my mom played the clarinet – she encouraged me to participate, and I also played the piano when I was 9, so that’s kind of how I got my start.”

Mr. Andress explained that high school students can be challenging to teach, yet “…nothing prepares you all the way until you actually do it for the first time…” said Andress.

While some bandmembers see the band room as a fun, energetic place, the director pointed out how organized it has to be.

Regardless, the Los Osos High School Band definitely blew their whole Day Creek audience away.
