A few months ago, Amazon opened its first four grab-and-go grocery selection stores, Amazon Go, currently located in – Seattle, Washington, and Chicago, Illinois. The “high-tech” supermarket has no registers or checkout lines. When customers walk in the door, they can scan their phones using the new, Amazon Go app. There are a limited number of associates that help prep ingredients and stock shelves. Amazon Go uses weight sensors on the shelves that identify if a product is being put into customers’ shopping bags or if the product is being put back. The company is reportedly planning to publicly open at least 3,000 cashier – less stores by 2021, according to Bloomberg.

Previously, Jeff Bezos commented on the opening of Amazon Go, “Since opening, we’ve been thrilled to hear many customers refer to their shopping experience as ‘magical.’ What makes the magic possible is a custom-built combination of computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning, which come together to create Just Walk Out shopping.”
