The basketball season kicks off on the second Thursday of November for Day Creek Intermediate School, players and students, the stands filled with crowds of anxious fans eager to see who would claim victory in the first game. The matchup started with DCIS scoring the opening point, quickly matched by the Etiwanda Intermediate School Wildcats.
“I am really excited. I know it’s going to be a great game.” said Riley S., a seventh-grader on the team.
Both teams brought high intensity and played hard from the tip-off, but by the end of the first quarter, a clear frontrunner had emerged. DCIS led 15-3, putting the odds firmly in their favor.
“The team feels great. [My teammates] are good. [Practice] before today went well,” said Micah A., a sixth-grader on the team.
Despite having only two practices before the opener, DCIS gelled remarkably well on the court. The players moved as a unit, with crisp passing that created scoring chances. Highlights abounded, from stunning blocks to powerful layups.
“We only got two practices with the boys, so everybody’s still trying to get to know each other,” said head coach Mr. Rowland.
The crowd’s energy shook the stands as EIS struggled to find the basket. Meanwhile, DCIS converted layup after layup with precision. By halftime, the score of 29-9 made the outcome feel all but decided. EIS knew they faced an uphill battle.
“[The game] was pretty good, but we had too many turnovers. I think that my performance was really good, but I could have made more shots.” said Jackson T., the game’s MVP after scoring 9 points.
The third quarter ended with DCIS ahead 33-13, underscoring the lopsided affair. Even with an injury sidelining seventh-grader Jordan T. (right wrist), the team displayed unwavering determination.
Day Creek sealed the victory with a final score of 47-19, showcasing their dominance. With strong teamwork and command of the court, the season ahead looks bright for the Coyotes.
