Day Creek students know that soccer is the most beloved game in the world and that it’s certainly a huge sport here at Day Creek. But basketball isn’t far behind on the world scene, magnified by the recent success of international players like Luka Dončić and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
For those completely unfamiliar with the game, it consists of five players: a point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center.
Students on campus enjoy the thrill of this sport, evidenced by the number of players dribbling up and down many of the courts during lunch.
“[I think basketball is fun] because it is my type of sport. I like the teamwork part. When you win, it’s really fun. [Even when I don’t win] it is still fun and I just keep trying,” said Michael T.
October and intramurals are pretty much synonymous. And hoops players on campus are in heaven.
“Basketball has a type of competitiveness that I can keep up with. It can help your body as well as provide happiness. I’m not really good at basketball, but I still play it because I think it is fun. I can meet some really good players,” said Zimin L.
During intramural basketball, both boys and girls can demonstrate their skills while impressing coaches and friends.
“I like basketball because of its teamwork, strategy, and what makes up basketball specifically. Teamwork helps you because in the future if you need to work with different people, it’s easier for you to talk about a certain topic,” said 6th grader Liam.
Teachers on campus enjoy the game as well, as after school activities allow them to exit the classroom to step onto the basketball courts in an effort to encourage student growth in a completely different environment.
“I want to make sure the kids have a good time, learn some basketball skills, and get them excited about the sport. We’re running them through lots of different activities to help them develop skills and getting them out there playing games hopefully will help them develop a love for the game,” said Mr. Evans.
Intramurals end on November 5th. The Howl is looking forward to a great season of basketball this year on campus.
