Derek Chauvin pleads guilty
January 5, 2022
After 18 long months, Derek Chauvin pled guilty to the civil rights charge related to George Floyd’s death. The sentence can be served at the same time as Chauvin’s 22-year prison sentence for the original state murder charge. This is the longest sentence ever required of an officer for killing in the line of duty. With this sentence comes five years of supervised probation. The other three officers plead not guilty in September, and their trial could begin in January. Floyd’s death sparked months of racial justice demonstrations and brought the country to a worried state. The situation created remarkable movements in our country and is something that will never be forgotten.
