On August 29, the Pentagon planned a drone strike. Tragically, it didn’t go as planned, as the drone struck the wrong people. ten lives were lost in seconds. Seven of those killed were children. On September 17th, officials began to publicly address the situation. “I offer my profound condolences to the family and friends of those who were killed,” President Biden said. Even after these apologies, frustrations continue to mount. Officials are calling this event a “tragic mistake.” The attack was intended to remove a suicide bomber who posed a threat to U.S troops and surrounding Afghanis. US Central Command had incorrectly identified the target as a threat. The military pullout of Afghanistan had people on edge. Their anxiety may have provoked a quick response that cost innocent lives. Officials are doing what they can to apologize for the tragic outcome, though observers wonder what can be done to avoid further tragedy while rooting out those who are responsible for acts of terror.
