The History Of Christmas

Joy C. and Courtney C.

Christmas is a holiday that celebrates numerous beliefs, including honoring the birth of Jesus Christ, an advertisement of fictitious characters, and songs for many people all over the world.

The holiday is referred to as a Christian holiday because it celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. The event is included in Luke 2:4-7 of the Bible:

“So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went their to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in  a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

In the fields and hills outside of Bethlehem, the shepherds tended their sheep when an angel appeared to them and said, “Don’t be afraid. I have good news for you and everyone. Today in Bethlehem a Saviour has been born for you. You will find the baby lying in a manger.” According to the story, a new light appeared in the sky where Jesus was born. Some wise men in other countries set out to find him and bring him gifts.

Christmas is also considered a commercial phenomenon which represents fictitious figures such as Santa Claus. He is a fictional character known for bringing presents to children on Christmas Eve. Santa is based off of a monk in the third century named St. Nicholas. He was known for being extremely kind and became the subject of legends of which he delivered presents to children.  Over time, this story also evolved to include sleighs, reindeer, and elves in a workshop.

According to the webiste “History of Christmas Carols,” “Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago, but these were not Christmas Carols. They were pagan songs, sung at the Winter Solstice celebrations as people danced round stone circles (The word carol originally meant to dance to something).”

All in all, Christmas is a holiday that praises countless views involving the birth of Jesus, the fabricated personality of Santa Claus, and widely popular Christmas tunes and carols.
