When I Grow Up, I Want To Be…

“When I grow up I want to be…” Little kids tend to fill in that blank with their dream job. However, the older they get, the more practical the answer. However, that doesn’t mean they still can’t dream.

Some people have pursued the career that they’d imagined in elementary school. Others, however, grow well toward their adult life and do not find their career until years beyond high school.

“I did not know what I wanted to do when I was in high school,” said Mrs. Lyon, principal of Day Creek Intermediate School. “I only knew what I wanted to do when I was in college.”

Some children look for that perfect path in life, with hopes for a successful route. “I want to be a sniper,” said Johnny L. According to goarmy.com, the entry rank of Private (E1) would earn a salary of $18,378.

“I want to be a heart surgeon,” said eighth grade student Amaly B. “It’s interesting to fix a heart.”

Another student at Day Creek, Kat K., knows the path she wants to take in life. “I want to be a forensic anthropologist. They investigate human remains.”

Some kids seek a specific path while others are fine sticking with traditional jobs. According to seniorjobbank.org the top job in California is a retail salesperson.

“I want to be a P.E. teacher,” said Caden B.  “It seems fun.”

What about the teachers? What did they want to be when they were in middle school?

“I think I wanted to be an architect,” said Mrs. Blahut, an eighth grade teacher. “I liked to draw.”

When asked what got her into teaching, Mrs. Clayton said, “I needed a career that would help me provide for my family.”

“I actually wanted to be a nurse,” said Mrs. Manfretti, who a proctor on campus. “I liked helping people, especially sick people.”

Other teachers wanted to do something even more unique. “I wanted to be a helicopter pilot,” said Mr. Ferrari, an eighth grade teacher. “I was always fascinated with helicopters.”

Mrs. Rivas, another teacher at DCIS, also had a unique career that she wanted to pursue. “I wanted to be an archaeologist because Indiana Jones just came out [during that time] and that’s what everybody wanted to be.”
