President Donald Trump signs bill to launch a space force.

Last Tuesday, “President Donald Trump signed an order to create a Space Force” – a proposed 6th “branch of the military in which it has been decided to monitor and protect the US from threats in space”, according to USA Today. “The organization would be overseen by the Air Force and Trump would also need congressional approval to create a Space Force.” He offers for it to be a “separate branch of the military that would be equal to the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, which faced some resistance.

“Although United States space systems have historically maintained a technological advantage over those of our potential adversaries, those potential adversaries are now advancing their space capabilities and actively developing ways to deny our use of space in a crisis or conflict,” the directive said.

“If Congress agrees to create the new military branch, it would be the first added to the U.S. military since 1947, when the Air Force was founded. The U.S. military depends heavily on space for communications, observations, and detecting incoming missiles,” reports National Geographic.
