Should students be required to wear school uniforms?

School uniforms have become a popular trend among schools across the US. However, some think that school uniforms are boring and that having to wear the same clothes every single day is disgusting (especially for the fashionistas out there).

However, there are both pros and cons to having school uniforms.

People argue that school uniforms teach students to be respectful and responsible. According to the Sandusky Register, “roughly 160,000 children miss school daily due to to fear of attack and or intimidation by other students,” Therefore, school uniforms provide a more bully-free environment for school. Unfortunately, school is often less about education and more about popularity and how they look.

The Long Beach School District made national headlines when it decided that all middle school and elementary school students would be required to wear school uniforms. This caused many lawsuits.

Most people lean towards not having school uniforms because they feel that students should be able to express themselves in their clothing. Style is a non-issue if students are required to wear the same thing everyday. Some students also feel that clothes distinguish one’s identity from others and that clothes are like a personal trademark.

“I like the idea of school uniforms and people go  school uniforms a lot of times because it brings the idea of equality,” said Mr. Apodaca. A lot of how kids interacts with each other [depends] on how we dress. Kids on the basketball court will dress [different] from other cliques. Kids wear what their friends were because they want to fit in.”

School uniforms are definitely a controversial topic that is debated throughout the country. Most students prefer no school uniforms because they don’t feel the individuality that they have with wearing regular clothes. Yet, there are still a lot of students that are scared that their clothes won’t be as stylish as others and have trouble attending school for that reason.
