Major Earthquake Prediction: What Will Happen?
October 27, 2017
We Californians aren’t scared of earthquakes. In fact, most of us would rather experience a quake than mow the lawn.
However, several experts are telling us there is a tremendous earthquake long overdue for Southern California. And when they say tremendous, they mean it. Why do they say this? Because here in California, the Pacific plate and the North American plate are both moving northward. The Pacific plate is moving faster than the North American plate, leading to a buildup of tension that’s released in earthquakes. Big earthquakes along the San Andreas fault happen about once every 150 years, but we haven’t had one for more than 300 years. Long story short, a big quake is coming and it might kill all of us.
The pressure of the San Andreas fault has continued to build over the century since the last significant quake. Scientists have predicted that it will be between 7.0 and 9.0. For those of you that aren’t seismology nerds, a 8.0 earthquake is enough to crack the ground. Yikes. Better get out the disaster plan….if you have one. Scientists warn that the chance of the “big one” striking in the next 30 years has doubled since 2008. After the large 7.1 Mexico earthquake, it’s more likely than ever.
When the earthquake happens, some estimate that the widespread damage could total up to $300 billion. Most of us will probably be dead. Don’t worry, I’ll come to all of your funerals. Now we can finally use that meme, “All my friends are dead.” CNBC says they found that simulated earthquake events could end in, “upwards of $300 billion in total ground-up losses to properties.” That’s over a million times the cost of a Tesla.
A major earthquake could damage infrastructure at ports, rail lines, highways, and bridges that ship in all your goods. This would delay many producers, and would take weeks to months to repair. Say goodbye to that fidget spinner you ordered!
Finally, up to 3.5 million homes could be destroyed. This was found in an analysis created by CoreLogic, a worldwide data analyzing firm. On the bright side, at least your parents won’t have to pay the utility bills anymore. They’ll just have to pay for the expense for rebuilding your house. The total cost to rebuild all those damaged houses would cost around $289 billion. Unfortunately, Bob the Builder won’t be coming to fix your house. To add, only about 10 percent of homeowners in California have earthquake insurance. When the earthquake hits, we won’t be the only ones crying, our wallets will be too.
