Is traffic the main cause of your parents’ morning tantrums?

Ava Q., Writer

If a student of DCIS asked their parents what they least liked about dropping their kids off at school, they would most likely say the traffic. Everybody hates traffic. It slows us down and makes us late, neither of which creates a fun morning. Traffic can cause accidents, and it’s caused by accidents. In fact, one of our own students was hit by a car while riding his bike only a few days after school started. With only two broken bones in his arm, he is pretty lucky.

The traffic that happens at our school is caused by people cutting in front of one another in the line of cars. Numerous amounts of people take their kids to school every day by car rather than by foot. But, some students live too far away to walk, so they have no choice but to take some form of transportation. Therefore, the build up happens so fast because cars keep coming and coming, faster than they are leaving.

On the first day of school, there was a line over four blocks long and it took at least ten minutes to drive each block. We’re not talking about lunch line bad, we’re talking about airport bad. Since the first day, it has gotten better, but the line is still too long, and some parents are not obeying traffic laws or being courteous to others. It is not a pretty sight to see a mad parent, in her pajamas, giving unsolicited driving advice to other parents. *ahem mom!*

The situation is not getting any better, especially due to the fact that some people are not on time. Those parents who were not up early enough cut others off in line, and those of us that made it out of the house on time have to suffer the consequences and possibly be late because others think it’s appropriate to cut in line when they approach Coyote Drive. Some parents don’t realize that their lack of planning can result in reckless driving and accidents. People, clocks and schedules are there for a reason. Use them!
