Many places around the world have different Valentine’s Day traditions.

Valentine’s day. The holiday of red, pink, and giving your sweetie chocolates- at least, here in the United States. Around the world, there are some crazy traditions for this holiday.

10. In Denmark, people play a sort of “secret santa” game, but instead of giving secret gifts, the game is to guess who the sender of a secret note to you is from. If you happen to get it correct, your prize will wait for quite a while: a tasty candy egg on Easter Sunday.

9. This next one is a little like the last one, but weirder! Brazil’s take on Valentines is called “Day of the Enamored,” and is held almost 4 months after ours: on June 12. The weirdest part is that some play a game where they draw names from a hat and whoever’s name is pulled out of the hat is (supposedly) who you’re going to marry!

8. Instead of romance, in Finland, Valentine’s Day is about celebrating friendship. The holiday is called “Friend’s Day” over there, and you just celebrate and party with your BFF’s!

7. In Japan, Valentine’s Day is similar to the US’s tradition of buying your sweetheart chocolates, but instead of having men buy the women chocolates, it’s reversed! They even have different qualities of chocolates reserved for how much you like the person!

6. In Slovenia, Valentine’s Day is celebrated not just as the day of love, but as the indicator for when to start planting and sowing.

5. In a special haunted-house-type attraction in London, guests are served a spooky Valentine’s special: a cupcake made to look like an actual human heart. Gross!

4. In South Africa, couples celebrate Valentine’s a bit like America. One distinguishing difference is a Roman tradition of “Lupercalia,” in which enamored young girls write their fling’s name on their sleeves. Imagine if we did this at Day Creek… a bit like candy grams!

3. In Germany, it’s very popular to give your sweetie a giant heart-shaped gingerbread cookie with a romantic note on it. Kind of like SweetHearts.

2. According to Celtic tradition, the best and most honorable gift to give to your love should be…a spoon? This is actually a popular gift! Why not a love fork, too? A love spork?

1. Finally, we have come to our weirdest, strangest Valentine’s day tradition. *Deep breath* Ever wanted to see St. Valentine in real life? You can at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Rome. But, you say that St. Valentine is probably dead, right? Right, you’ll get to see the decayed remains of Valentine’s Day’s namesake. Yeah, no thanks.
