On Tuesday, President Obama overruled his secretary of defense to reduce the sentence of former soldier Chelsea Manning. According to The Washington Post, Obama and some administrative officials saw the sentence as excessive. Chelsea Manning, who served in the U.S. Army, was accused of stealing and disseminating government documents to WikiLeaks. Manning explained how she stole and released the documents while being testified in court. According to CNN, she was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Manning, formerly Bradley Manning, was born male. In 2013, she asked to be identified as a woman and was later provided with hormone therapy while in prison. Obama commuted Manning’s sentence on January 17, 2017. A White House statement said that her sentence is set to expire on May 17, 2017.
