Do you think of presents when you hear Christmas?

What do you think about when you hear the word Christmas? Do you think Santa? Do you think presents and cookies and reindeer and, and, and… Or do you think, what the heck is all of that? Who’s that fat man in the red suit?

What the heck does Santa have to do with Christmas?  For centuries, he’s been the jolly guy with a white beard who lives at the North Pole and brings gifts to children on Christmas. In real life, the story of Santa Claus was rumored to originate from the a generous and charitable man named St. Nicholas. He was a Christian bishop who helped the needy by giving them money, and gifts on Christmas. After he died, his gift-giving lived on and he became known as Mr. Claus. All around the world, they call him different things. Like Weihnachtsmann in Germany, Papa Noel in Argentina, Babadimri in Albina, and an endless variety of other unique names. I sure am thankful for Santa!

According to Christianity, Christmas is a holiday that celebrates the day that Jesus was born. People give presents because of the wise men who presented gifts to the son of God. The tradition has lived on for thousands of years until today. That’s a pretty huge deal!

We can’t forget our favorite part of this holiday-or at least mine: decorating and baking of course! Personally, I’m not the one who bakes, I’m the test-taster. This is all out of the selflessness of my heart. I save people from being poisoned! You’re welcome.

Why do we decorate trees? The holiday custom came from Germany when they used candles to illuminate the trees. The trees must have burned down a lot and the local fire department had job security! Maybe this is what’s meant when people say, “May your days be merry and bright!”

However you celebrate, wherever you are, wish someone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Watch out for the jolly man up overhead! He might run over grandma with his sleigh.
