A hum of blenders is your welcome to Swirl’d Acai, the new home of fresh fruit layered into a cup, each swirl of açaí forming a perfect spiral. Behind the counter, Ranah A. carefully crafts a soft-serve bowl, topping it with strawberries, chocolate, and a drizzle of honey. At Swirl’d Acai, every bowl starts with both precision and passion.
The store opened on February 21, a female-owned, family-run shop, inspired by a simple craving that wouldn’t go away.
“So the first time I had soft serve [acai], it was in Hawaii, and I kept craving it,” Ranah said, “ I kept searching it up, and it kept giving the normal acai and not the soft serve. So that’s how I got the idea.”
That idea grew into something bigger. Ranah and her siblings each launched their own açaí businesses in Wisconsin, turning it into a shared family venture. When she moved to California with her husband, she decided to branch out and create something of her own.
“Originally, [we] started in Wisconsin. That was where we did our first location, and then it became a family business where me and my siblings each did one of our own. But when I moved to California, I was like I want to do my own thing separate from my siblings. I named it Swirl’d because acai looked like a swirl.” Ranah said.
Before opening her store, Ranah struggled to find work that truly felt right.
“I was a kindergarten teacher for five years, and I did insurance. I felt like nothing really clicked until I opened up my own store,” Ranah said.
That sense of purpose is reflected in every item on the menu. The açaí itself is smooth and balanced, avoiding an artificial taste or overpowering bitterness. Customers can choose between dessert-style bowls or more traditional combinations, depending on what they’re craving.
“I liked the Acai because it was really good and it paired amazingly with just the right amount of toppings,” she said.
Beyond the food, the shop’s bright pink aesthetic and variety of options create an inviting atmosphere that keeps customers coming back. Popular choices include the Nutella Bowl, the Swirl’d Bowl and the Dubai Chocolate Bowl.
“The most popular one is our most basic one (the Swirl’d Bowl), which is just acai, granola, strawberry, banana, and honey. My favorite is the ‘very berry’ because I love berries.” Ranah said.
Customers can also order drinks and toast options, adding variety to the experience. From sweet fruit-topped toast to savory avocado options, the menu offers something for everyone. Smoothies, protein shakes and fizzy refreshments round out the drink selection, with optional add-ins like collagen peptides, vitamin C and protein powder.
“The toasts and drinks taste really good. It was full of flavor and texture. It was a great addition alongside the acai bowls.” Julianna said.
As her business grows, Ranah continues to look ahead. One idea she hopes to bring back is a rotating “bowl of the month,” a concept she first introduced in Wisconsin. By constantly introducing new flavors, she hopes to keep customers curious and coming back for more.
“For example, I get a pomegranate bowl, papaya, like whatever fruit is in season. I usually do it as a bowl of the month.”
For Ranah, this business is more than just serving açaí, it’s doing something she truly enjoys every day. From making each bowl to seeing customers’ reactions, her passion shows in every detail. What began as a personal craving has turned into a career that finally feels right.
“The thing that makes me happy is when I see a customer take a picture of the bowl. I feel like ‘Oh my god, it’s a picture of the bowl.’ Like I like making it cute to eat and taste good,” Ranah said.
