On February 21, the animation world gathered in Los Angeles for the annual Annie Awards, the most prestigious celebration of animated storytelling. For weeks, fans speculated about which films would take home the night’s biggest prizes. When the winners were finally announced, however, the results stunned audiences and sparked debate among animation fans everywhere.
The unexpected star of the night was KPop Demon Hunters, a film released in the summer of 2025 that blends music, action, and supernatural adventure. By the end of the evening, the movie had swept the competition, including the ceremony’s highest honor, Best Feature.
While judges praised the film’s voice acting, story, and direction, some viewers questioned whether the awards reflected the best animation of the year or the judges’ personal preferences.
A Masterpiece or a Mess?
To many fans, KPop Demon Hunters earned every trophy it received. Judges described the film as authentic and emphasized that it was more than just a musical. They said it was a bold and original animated experience.
Many students share that view.
“Children probably enjoy that movie,” said Dylan D. “[They might like] the characters.”
Still, not everyone was convinced. Some believe the movie’s popularity has been exaggerated and that its awards only reinforce that perception. For those critics, the night felt less like a victory and more like an overhyped moment.
“I don’t think ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ should have won every one of those categories.” said Micah C. “It really depended on the point of view of the judges.”
The End of an Era
This year’s outcome also marked a shift in animation history. For four years in a row, a film from the hit anime franchise Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba had won top honors when nominated. The streak finally ended this year.
Fans of the series were quick to share their opinions.
“The animation is better on ‘Demon Slayer,’” said Jordan D.
Another fan of the series, Hiran A., also felt the anime deserved the award.
“‘Demon Slayer’ should’ve won because character development in ‘Demon Slayer’ was much more simple.”
The Judges’ Defense
With more than 30 categories presented during the ceremony, the Annie Awards offer many opportunities for films to be recognized. Each category is evaluated by six judges: one chairperson and five industry professionals.
KPop Demon Hunters did not just win a few awards. The film took home 10 trophies, winning every category for which it was nominated. The sweep made animation history.
“KPop Demon Hunters sweeping craft categories suggests strong industry support for the project’s aesthetic and technical strengths,” reported Cineverse magazine.
Moving Forward
Even after the ceremony ended, discussion about KPop Demon Hunters continued online and in classrooms. Some see it as groundbreaking. Others believe it is overrated.
But in one important way, the film has already succeeded. It has captured the attention of audiences everywhere.
“This movie was a little scary to pitch and scary to make, but the success of it means audiences want to see original ideas,” said Maggie Kang, creator and co-director of K-Pop Demon Hunters.
Whether remembered as a bold triumph or a controversial upset, one thing is certain: the night K-Pop Demon Hunters dominated the Annie Awards is a moment animation fans will not forget anytime soon.
