The Vatican declared on April 21 that 135 cardinals had elected the new pope. The process, which begin on May 7 in the Sistine Chapel, concluded early on May 8. Robert Prevost, born in Chicago, was chosen as the new pope of the Catholic Church. As tradition calls for it, he took the name Pope Leo XIV. Leo is the 267th pope and the first American pope in history.
