It’s two weeks before Christmas break and a friend walks up with a basket. It’s overflowing with all sorts of odds and ends like snacks, a blanket, a stuffed animal, a pair of cozy socks and more. This cultural phenomenon started in 2023 and exploded on campuses across the country in 2024.
“A brr basket is a basket that is Christmas-themed for your friends or family,” said Alana S.
Brr baskets are filled with intention for people that you care for. Items vary depending on the person receiving it.
“I’d want some slippers, candy, a candle, and a blanket in my brr basket,” said Aubree S. a 6th grader at DCIS.
Lots of kids give them to their friends as early Christmas gifts, though Halloween involves boo baskets and Valentine’s Day has bae baskets. Others simply choose to do it whenever they feel like it to show their appreciation for their friends.
“I buy my friends brr baskets just for fun and to make them happy,” said Alana S.
Price limits range depending on the person receiving the basket. Mutual friends may buy them with a $20 limit, while a closer friend might spend $50-$100.
“I would be willing to spend a little over $100 for my friend’s brr basket,” said Aubree S.
As brr baskets grow in popularity, they give friends a simple way to show that they care for one another. It is a meaningful way to show appreciation for friends during the holidays.
