In the first time in history, the House voted to remove the House Speaker, in a motion to vacate. On September 30th, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy signed a spending bill to keep the government open which caused infighting within the GOP. A government shutdown was nearly avoided when McCarthy approved a temporary spending bill. Infighting caused Rep. Matt Gaetz to set a motion to vacate the speakership. On October 3rd, 216-210 voted to oust McCarthy of his speakership. After weeks of debate and failing to vote for Rep. Jim Jordan, the House picked Rep. Mike Johnson as speaker on October 25th. The spreading bill expires on November 17th. Speaker Johnson stated that keeping the government open is a priority. Mike Johnson is a mainstream and hardline Republican. He is one of the most inexperienced speakers in history, only serving 4 terms and no leadership role. He is a conservative on key issues. This includes a conservative stance on LGBTQ+ rights, abortion, and being a Donald Trump ally.
