Lebron James told reporters that his last year in the NBA will be played with his son, which would be a minimum of three years away.

Basketball star, Lebron James, has played in the NBA for 11 years, for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers. Now that he is nearing the end of his career, he wants to spend his last year with his son, Bronny James.

“My last year will be played with my son,” LeBron told Jason Lloyd of the Athletic. “Wherever Bronny is at, that’s where I’ll be. I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for one year. It’s not about the money at that point.”

James’ contract with the Lakers ends in 2023, so in order to join another team with Bronny, he has to finish his contract. Bronny is a junior in high school, meaning he can’t join his father in the NBA for two more years.

After the contract ends, James has the option of extending his deal with the Lakers for one more year. If he decides to not renew the contract, James becomes a free agent during the 2023 season.

While his son will be a freshman in college, James has many options for his year as a free agent. He can either go back with the Cleveland Cavaliers or he can join a new team for one season.

“The door’s not closed on that,” James told The Athletic on the campus of Cleveland State. “I’m not saying I’m coming back and playing, I don’t know. I don’t know what my future holds.”

In order to go into the NBA draft, Bronny must play at least one year of college basketball. Some top tier colleges that he has shown interest in are Duke, Ohio State, Tennessee and Texas.

“Athletically, [Bronny] is impressive and he’s continued to become more athletic over the last year,” 247 Sports Director of Basketball Recruiting Evan Daniels wrote.”Where he impresses the most is with his feel for the game, vision and passing.”

Once Bronny enters the 2024 NBA draft, it is likely that he will be picked in the top 5 due to his stellar statistics. He averages 2.4 steals, 10 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

“[Bronny] is a 6’4 combo guard with excellent defensive instincts and upper body strength. He excels in open court and also has a good feel on offense. He’s a streaky but confident shooter. He’s actually good. Well done LeBron,” tweeted Rashad Phillips, a NBA and college evaluation specialist.

Lebron turned thirty-seven in December, which is considered old age in the NBA. By the time his son is able to play professionally, Lebron would be 39. How will Lebron play at such an old age? So far, The King has kept his body in shape well into his 30s.

“I’m on the other side of the hill. But, I mean, I’ve thought about it — where I’m at with it. I’m still playing at such a high level, I haven’t given it too much thought. We’ll see where my body takes me and my mind. I’ve put in enough hours and punched enough clocks where, when that time comes, I’ll be OK with it,” Lebron told reporters.

How iconic can it be? Seeing one of the greatest to ever do it, and the future of the NBA playing alongside each other on the same court.
