Here we go again! A new variant of Covid-19 called Omicron was recently discovered in Europe and is spreading rapidly. Countries like Hong Kong have taken precautions and closed borders to South African countries where the variant appears to have originated. Hong Kong has detained people for entering within 21 days of leaving South Africa. Are they taking it too far? Or is this what we need to do to prevent COVID from spreading? UW Health’s Dan Shirley said, “Step one is to see how widespread it is, so that’s what’s happening today, minute by minute.” The questions of transmissibility, severity, and ‘does the vaccine work?’ is definitely the priority. With almost all of Europe at risk, it may easily spread to other continents. And if an updated COVID vaccine takes 100 days to modify, will the whole world be accepted by this variant by the time they update the vaccine? Will we have to go back under lockdown? Will COVID ever end?
