Freshmen Files: A Freshie’s First Week At LOHS
August 24, 2017
High School! Yes, the last four years before parting my own way. Terrifying, right? Actually, not really. But this could only be my perspective. Of course, it’s a completely new school and I am adjusting to the drastic reality of moving from the top of middle school to rock bottom of high school. However, I still have half of my friends, (you can guess what happened to the other half).
During the summer, I got my chance to explore the school. Being involved in the school’s choir and tennis programs gave me a chance to get used to the new environment during week-long camps. If you’re thinking what a waste of summer, you’re 100% correct! But, I have to admit that these camps were a BIG help.
I’m sure you’ve heard all those rumors about freshman getting lost on the first day of school. Well, I’m here to tell you that these rumors are… true, very true. In fact, I walked confidently into the wrong classroom and sat there until I found out the teacher’s name. Once I realized I was in the wrong class, I so gracefully stumbled out of my chair, grabbed my backpack, and asked the teacher for directions to the class I should’ve been sitting in for the past 5 minutes. Then there was the struggle of explaining to my actual teacher why I was so late to class. But don’t worry too much; the teachers were very understanding. I guess this happens often!
After telling you that horror story, let me fill you in on some pros of high school – well at least Los Osos – that I’ve already taken advantage of. There are only six periods, not seven, unless someone chose to take something during their 0 period. The school has vending machines with awesome snacks, and our student store sells all kinds of food, like ice cream and even Top Ramen! Try not to lose all your money in the first week! Fridays are late-start days, so school doesn’t start until 9:05. Who wouldn’t like that? Students can have their phones out anytime during the school day except during classes. Here’s an extra plus… we can wear flip-flops! The bottom line is: the level of freedom in high school is insane!
Now you’re probably wondering about the classes and their difficulty level. I’m currently taking all Honors, which I do not recommend doing unless you’re ready to take on piles of work. The teachers are not evil, but instead pretty reasonable and funny. As for homework, there’s not too much yet, but again, it’s only the first week.
A day at Los Osos is never boring. Every lunch, there is some kind of event going on. Whether it’s students versus teachers volleyball or a carnival (these actually occurred my first week), I guarantee that there will always be something to do. Don’t forget about spirit weeks! Next week is the first football game of the year, which will probably be our first loss of the year, so the days leading up to it will be full of school spirit! And right after the football game is the school’s kick-off dance!
Hey, eighth graders! You’ve got a lot to look forward to, but for now, enjoy middle school and its glory. Seventh and sixth graders, don’t even worry yet about what I’ve just said in the last six paragraphs. You still have most of your middle school chapter to complete. Y’all have a great year!
