On Wednesday, December 11, the girls basketball team had its playoff game against the Etiwanda Wildcats. Both teams played vigorously, and EIS won the game with a score of 20-14.
Before the game started, players at Day Creek were optimistic, even though they had lost to this team before.
“I think we can put up a good fight,” said Rosalie P.
However, things at the start didn’t look good for the Coyotes. The score at the end of the 1st quarter was 6-0, with EIS ahead. At the end of the 2nd quarter, the Wildcats lead 12-4. EIS put up a good defense and managed to prevent the Coyotes from scoring during the third quarter, resulting in a 16-4 lead.
However, there is always a chance for a comeback, and the Day Creek girls made a game of it, scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter. Rosalie P. and Allison M. respectively scored 11 and 3 points.
“I honestly think we could have scored more. Our shots went in and out [of the basket], but I feel pretty good. I’m still disappointed that we lost. We have a couple friends at EIS, and they’re pretty good. But I feel like we could have pulled our own better and to have a better season next year. Scoring points is fine, but basketball isn’t an individual game. It’s a team game, and if I only do good, it’s not going to feel so great,” said Rosalie P.
The Wildcats made good shots and passes that helped them win. Saja W. scored a final shot at the end of the game putting the Wildcats up at the buzzer by 6. The lead scorer was Coco Y. with 9 points.
Even though EIS won the game, some of their players were not satisfied and regretted missing out on the ESD district title.
“I feel awesome but not awesome at the same time because I would like to go against Heritage. But I would also not like to go against Heritage because of that one big girl that bodies me. I would like to get 1st place. I practice 3 hours a day, [though] sometimes my shot is off. One time, my shot went over the backboard,” said Coco Y.
Despite the loss, Mr. Celis voiced pride in his team.
“I love my team, because they’re hard workers. A lot of girls have never played this sport before, so they’re trying something new. I really appreciate all the hard work,” said Mr. Celis.
