For most girls, makeup is one of the most important parts of a daily routine. It’s more than just a step in the morning. It covers up that pimple you’ve had for a week, impresses that person you hope to impress and accents the highlights of a natural face. Makeup is also simple fun, though it’s hardly a new invention.
“It can enhance features you already have. I think people should [wear makeup] to a certain extent, if you don’t feel like wearing makeup that day, that’s fine too. I wear makeup because I like how I look with makeup on,” said Shelby P.
It originated thousands of years ago to show someone’s wealth or to appeal to the gods. Although makeup has developed since ancient Egypt, intentions are different today.
Makeup can bring confidence on a bad day. It can also help you feel more outgoing. It also has its downsides as mascara can run, or your perfect morning makeup can smear after a sweaty Coyote Run.
“I usually just wear mascara to make my eyelashes longer, but I think it’s also about hiding your insecurities and making you feel better about yourself,” said Melissa D.
Middle school is the prime time for self expression as well as self doubt. They go hand in hand. Makeup is one way to bring confidence.
“I wear makeup because it makes me feel good about myself and it’s just fun. I think [people] should wear it if they want to. I wear it because I enjoy it and it is nice,” said Kate B.
Makeup is also a huge money-making industry. Fortune magazine stated that the 2023 makeup market will exceed $313 billion.
Some people don’t understand the impact makeup can have on someone’s day. It can change your mood and perspective.
“I wear makeup because it looks good, it’s fun and honestly it’s now like a hobby. It’s important because it shows creativity and can spark that creative piece in people,” said Maya J.
