Just minutes after takeoff from Portland International Airport, Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 suffered a mid-flight door blowout resulting in a hole in the side of the fuselage. Almost instantaneously, the plane had a rapid loss of cabin pressure as air was sucked out the plane. The cabin quickly cooled to as low as -57 degrees. The emergency oxygen mask dropped for both passengers allowing them to stay alive. Luckly, no one was sitting in the row with the emergency door. The plane was taking off so the passengers had their seatbelt fastened, preventing them from being sucked out. The cockpit door slammed open from the depressurization, alerting the crew to put on their oxygen masks. The depression damaged their headsets, making communication difficult with the rest of the crew in the cabin. The pilots descended the plane to more breathable air. After 20 minutes in the air, ground control gave clearance to do an emergency landing back at Portland International. The FAA has launched an immediate investigation and inspection of 171 Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft. Alaska Airlines grounded 65 of their planes and 170 flights canceled. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt.
