While my mother was driving me home from my brother’s soccer practice, she filled the car with excitement as she announced, “We’re going to the World Series!” I wanted to jump out of my car seat and dance, but I had my seatbelt on. The next thing I knew I was standing inside Dodger Stadium eating a French dip sandwich from Philippe’s the Original.
Before the game began, players from the Yankees started batting practice. I headed down toward the left field wall, hoping that someone in pinstripes would hit a ball my way. Suddenly, Aaron Judge cranked a ball in my direction, but a rude person stuck his hand in front of my face, blocking my view. He caught the ball. I seethed inside.
Minutes later, Gleyber Torres hit a second ball my way. This one was mine. I leaned over the fence and grabbed the ball in my glove. I was so excited that I sprinted as fast as I could to my dad and told him, “I got the ball!” He then put it securely in his bag, so nobody could thieve it.
The innings flew by, but I distinctly remember the fifth inning. I felt so happy to be there, that I couldn’t describe the moment. My excitement grew even more when the Dodgers took the first lead with a stunning RBI by Teoscar Hernandez.
Later, in the sixth inning, all hope seemed lost when Giancarlo Stanton hit a homerun, putting the Yankees up 2-1. All I could think about was the Dodgers losing the first game and even losing the World Series. That would be a long, long walk to the car.
Then in the 10th inning, the Dodgers were tied up with the Yankees. History was made as Freddie Freeman hit MLB’s first World Series walk-off grand slam. And that was that. The Dodgers won the game 6-3. The crowd went absolutely wild. Out of nowhere, two people passed out on me. My parents didn’t even notice as they were elated by that insane grand slam. Even after the unbelievable game, the crowd would not stop chanting Freedie Freeman’s name. Freddie, Freddie, Freddie.
On the way out of the stadium, I had another french dip sandwich and some ice cream to top off the evening. While walking proudly to the car, all I heard was party music and people continuing to yell, “Freddie Freddie”
I got in my car and turned on “We Are the Champions” by Queen.
When I got home I brushed my teeth while wearing my newly purchased, game-worn Dodgers World Series hat and got ready to go to bed. “Wow, that was the best night of my life.”
