Day Creek Intermediate is heading in a new direction this year with Shrek the Musical. The play involves all grade levels on campus, though the majority of singers, dancers, and actors this year are sixth graders. According to the cast members, the musical preparation is moving along smoothly.
“It is going really good. We are learning our songs and we are doing a little bit of dancing. It is very fun,” said Taylor S., who leads with the role of Fiona.
Practices show a level of intensity that offers promise for a highly anticipated production.
“I think especially with this show, the dances say so much about the play. So far they have been very good,” said Gianna C. the student choreographer of the musical.
The play casts three lead roles for Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey. Playing these characters takes a lot of dedication and time to memorize pages of lines, challenging dances, and specific marks on stage. Actors rehearse on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week. Smaller roles aren’t required to go daily, but some go anyway.
“I try to go to every rehearsal, but I also have another play to go to, Moana. I haven’t been there for a week, but I still practice at home,” said Hazel L., the teen Fiona.
Mrs. Harris, a 6th grade teacher on campus is the director of the play this year. The pressure for her is heightened as she works with each of the cast members to create an amazing production.
“I love my job and getting the chance to direct it is very fulfilling. I have been in over 50 different productions and this is my fourth time as a director,” said Mrs. Harris, the director.
Everyone is working so hard to make this play a memory for the upcoming audiences. Like anything else done on campus, it takes hours of work.
“I believe we [the cast] are doing absolutely amazing and we are ahead of schedule and ready to go,” said Mrs. Harris, the director of the musical.
