Winter Band Concert

Did you see the band concert at Los Osos on December 9th?

On December 9 at Los Osos, students from the Day Creek performed their Winter Band Concert.

Mr. Bonner, Day Creek’s distinguished band teacher directed the students who participated in the concert. They performed songs like Midnight Procession, Swingle Bells, and Little Drummer Boy.

Madelyn A. is a 7th grade student who plays the alto saxophone and performed at the concert. She will have a choice to continue playing her instrument in 8th grade and beyond.

“I would continue band because it’s fun and we get to play around by making jokes and sometimes Mr. Bonner makes fun of people, but not in a bad way,” said Madelyn A.

Another enthusiastic band student, Adia G., also plays the alto saxophone, and like Madelyn, started band in 5th grade.

Everyone has a story about how they started playing and why they chose their specific instrument. Some kids take private lessons, while others simply joined band in elementary school.

“My dad played the saxophone and I thought it looked cool,” said Adia G.

Another student, Alecia D., saw things from a different perspective. They participate because parents see the benefit of understanding music and a specific instrument. Yet, if given the chance, they may drop out.

“I don’t like band because my mom won’t let me quit and I feel like I am forced against my will,” said Alecia D.

Students have different opinions on this year-long elective. Most of them enjoy band, but some of them struggle with the commitment that follows throughout middle school.
