Mommy, I want to be a business owner!

Mommy, I want to be a professional athlete!

Mommy, I want to be a superhero!

Imagine yourself on the beaches of the Caribbean. You have the job you’ve always desired. You’ve wanted to have this career since you were little (whatever it may be). Now look at you! Making it rain. As your own moolah falls, you don’t give a darn if you lose any through the process. Ahh the feeling of success…

Reality check! If life only worked the way we wanted it to. Most of our situations in life would be very different. According to NCAA.com there are about 8 million high school students who participate in the high school athletics program. Of those 8 million, 480,000 of them go on to play in college. And of the 480,000 only a fraction of them realize that becoming a professional athlete is just not their thing.

According to TheBalance.com the top 15 job choices for kids are to be an astronaut, musician, actor, dancer, teacher, firefighter, police officer, writer, detective, athlete, and so on. You’ve probably heard people foresee some of these things since elementary.

“I really like little kids, so I’ll probably want to go down that path. I volunteer at my church with the little kids and I just liked it from there.” said Allie S.

There is a lot more to it than just applying for a job. You have to do well in school and graduate from college, at the very least with a degree. According to WikiHow.com these steps include building your qualifications, doing your homework, pounding the pavement, and adjusting your mentality.

You probably won’t need these steps until after high school, but it isn’t a bad thing to think about it a bit sooner. In order to build your qualifications you need to:

  • Have some pretty good logical thinking and information handling
  • Have some technological ability
  • Be able to communicate effectively
  • Strive for strong people skills
  • Keep in mind the image of being so, filthy, rich (or at least move out of mom and dad’s basement).

These steps will help you get the interview for that job.

We’ve all heard Buzz Lightyear say, “To Infinity and Beyond,” and some of our parents have probably repeated this to bring encouragement. You can always do what you put your mind to, as long as you have that pep in your step. You just need to find what really motivates you and use that to take each step forward.
