The dark start of Wednesday 2 began this month, bringing murder and suspense.
Woe, we go again.
On August 6, Netflix released the first half of Wednesday Season 2, with the second half set to premiere on September 3. Fans who had been waiting since the show’s smash debut on November 23, 2022, finally got their wish. And the series did not disappoint. This sophomore season recaptures the suspense, mystery and dark humor that made Season 1 a teen phenomenon.
According to Ireland Film, Season 2 of Wednesday is the largest, most expensive production ever filmed in Ireland. More than 1,000 people, from cast and crew to producers and designers, worked on the season, with each episode costing around $20 million. That’s a massive jump from Season 1, which had a total production cost of about $60 million and was filmed in Romania, where Cantacuzino Castle stood in for Nevermore Academy.
The updated scale of the production is obvious. From carefully crafted set pieces and gothic details, Season 2 feels bigger, bolder, and eerier than its predecessor.
Jenna Ortega, returns in her iconic role as Wednesday Addams, bringing her same sharp wit and deadpan delivery that teens loved in Season 1. Ortega, who also stars in the Scream franchise, obviously prepared extensively for her role, learning fencing, archery, and even the cello to display Wednesday’s dark persona. Emma Myers is back as Enid, Wednesday’s bubbly best friend and emotional anchor.
Trailers for the season teased major twists, and the episodes delivered. With themes leaning more into murder and death than Season 1’s lighter stories of teen romance, Season 2 raises the stakes, and Wednesday’s psychic visions become pretty dark, pushing her to the edge, as she fears for Enid’s life.
Season 1 followed Wednesday’s arrival at Nevermore Academy after she was expelled from her old school. She unraveled a series of mysteries involving psychic visions, a monster haunting the school, and surprising secrets about her family’s past.
Season 2 builds on that foundation but shifts into darker territory. The central mystery revolves around a hooded stalker and chilling deaths tied to a murder of crows. The feel is dark and sinister, drawing viewers deeper into the Addams family’s disturbing world.
The risk of going dark has paid off. On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 2 holds an 84% Tomatometer score from critics and a 75% Popcornmeter rating from audiences, reflecting positive reactions across the board. Fans and critics praise the way the show balances horror, humor, and heartfelt characters.
True to form, this season of Wednesday leaves viewers dangling on a cliffhanger, setting the stage for the second half of the series in September. For fans, the wait may feel unbearable, but as Wednesday Addams might say, nothing worthwhile comes without a little bit of suffering.
