On February 15th, Day Creek’s PE staff hosted the annual Family Fitness Fun Night, a free event for Day Creek Intermediate’s families.  It was full of many different activities, including Dogbone, a tug-of-war contest on trampolines; Cage Match, a meld of dodgeball and gladiator fights; and Texas Hold’em, one player prevents another from army crawling to a cone; among many other fun and challenging physical games.  6th, 7th and 8th graders came with their families to enjoy a night filled with fun, laughter and a whole lot of sweat.  Kids as young as three and adults with gray hair all had a blast with the many available activities.  Even the PE teachers and principals competed with students and parents in the activities.

Principal Ms. Lyon started Family Fitness Night to provide a fitness-focused campus event for kids and their parents.

“We started Family Fitness Fun Night as a part of our district’s wellness program…to get families engaged and active in schooling,” said Ms. Lyon.

The event is formally held by the PE staff and takes place about the same time each year.  This staff runs the event with extensive planning and the intent to make it memorable for all involved.

“Our district likes us to do this so that families can come in here and have a place to have fun on a Wednesday night,” said PE teacher, Mr. Nemecek.  “We’d thought we’d had games that were friendly, so that people of all ages could jump in and have fun and challenge each other.”

Many students came to enjoy this event with their moms and dads.

“Family Fitness Night is a great way to bond [and spend] time with your family and friends,” said sixth grader Ella Decker.

Ella’s father agreed, having brought his daughter to the campus for the activities. He played multiple games, including Cage Match and Tug of War throughout the night.

“[I came] to hang out with my daughter,” said Mr. Decker.

Anne Salas arrived with her sons Luis and Miguel who played Cage Match and Tug of War, among other events.

“It sounded like a nice event for family,” she said.  “I like watching them have a good time.”
