Is Pokemon Go doing more bad than good?

Have you been part of the Pokémon Go sensation? Whether you hate it or live to play this addicting game, you have to admit that Pokémon Go is sweeping the nation. It now almost has more users than Twitter according to Forbes.com.

Many people have different opinions about this popular game. The initial concept was to create an app that allowed players to go out into the real world and “catch ‘em all.” Pokémon Go has encouraged people who haven’t been exercising in years to go and experience the real world‒ while still staying behind a screen. Some people would call it the best of both worlds. This game has done a lot of good, but on the flip side, what tragedies has it caused?

With all good comes the stories of catastrophe. The most common problem occurs while people play the game while driving. One of these chaotic incidents happened near Central Park in New York. A mystical, rare Pokémon called “Vaporeon” was released in the heart of Manhattan, causing people to run out of their cars, while on the busy streets, to capture the creature. Not only did this jam traffic, but it caused a huge flash mob.

Another incident occurred in Canada. Two policemen were injured when a cruiser backed into them. The first thing they said was, “I’m sorry, I was playing Pokémon Go.”

The second most concerning problem is people wandering onto private and military property while playing. Frenchman Romain Pierre was arrested for walking onto an Indonesian base. Because of this, Pokémon Go has already been banned in Iran and China.

This game has caused a lot of drama, but it has also done a ton of good. It motivates people to go outside, gathers users together, and brings a childhood fantasy to life. So is Pokémon Go worth the hype? You can determine that for yourself, but remember to proceed with caution and “catch ‘em all!”
