Jealousy

If you think about it, almost everyone experiences jealousy. People often want what they don’t have and forget to be grateful for what they do have.

People can be jealous about anything from clothes to family. Maybe some individuals want to have a sibling, while others want to get rid of their siblings. Ever heard someone say, “I want your hair. It is just so curly! My hair is dead straight!”?

“Dealing with curly hair is the worst problem of a girl’s life because everyday you’ve got to figure out how to tame it. It never works. [If I had straight hair,] I wouldn’t have to deal with these problems. Every morning when I wake up, it looks like I’m a lion that came out of the den,” said Abhigna A.

Jealousy can also make people get things done. Sometimes we decide to go on vacations because our friends are going. Our main goal seems to be to not miss out on anything.

“My friend went to Havasu and they were like hanging out with all my other friends. I was super jealous because I wasn’t there and I was just sitting at home alone. Then, I was like, ‘Mom, we should go to Havasu.’ She said yes and I got to be there with my friends.” said Gavin T.

Envy isn’t always directed towards tangible objects. Someone could be jealous of another person’s part in a play or success on a soccer team.

“[I feel jealous] when I audition for a show and there’s a good part that I really want and then somebody else gets that part, especially when you feel like you’re better than them or you’re older than them or you feel like they don’t deserve the part,” said Alison B.

“I’ve been jealous of the forwards. I always like to be a forward because they get to score goals and when I score goals I make money. My dad gives me five dollars for every goal I make. I have to be defense instead and I can’t score goals as a defender,” said Morgan M.

Overall, life is undoubtedly filled with envy. No matter how hard we resist, we are all victims of jealousy.
